Embrace

Western red cedar and moss

11’ x 10’ x 9’

2023

Embrace is a site-specific installation created for Bloedel Reserve, a 150-acre botanical garden on Bainbridge Island, WA. Walking through the forest, visitors encounter a curved sculpture that blends perfectly with its surroundings. A variety of living mosses, commonly found in the Pacific Northwest, are planted across the exterior, and continue to grow. Embrace is a contemplative space for viewers to pause and ground themselves in nature. The curve of the piece is taken from the Fibonacci spiral, prevalent in natural forms. Unique sonic qualities of the architecture amplify the sound of wind in the trees, calls of birds and frogs, and your own voice. The space becomes an invitation to consider the relationship between humans and nature, and our place in it.
